The Oscars are coming! 2009 nominees were announced this morning. “The revamped Best Picture category now includes ten nominations, but most critics think it is a race between The Hurt Locker and Avatar, each of which garnered 9 total nominations,” writes Starcasm. The full list of nominees is here; “In the major categories, I’d say the front-runners are Avatar, Bridges, Streep, Waltz, Mo’Nique and Bigelow,” writes The A.V. Club’s Newswire. “The big surprise in the Best Picture category was the inclusion of the $200M plus grosser The Blind Side,” remarks Mediaite. “Sure, we all knew that Sandra Bullock was a fave to land a Best Actress nominee (and she did), but few thought the film itself would sneak into the top category.” And the Winner Is… lists a few “noteworthy exclusions” from the list of nominees.
Conventional Folly is “glad to see Pixar finally score a best picture nomination for Up. Though I probably like this movie a little less than I liked Wall*E, it’s still a fine picture from a fine studio, and only the second animated film ever to be nominated for best picture (the first was Beauty and the Beast).”
And announced yesterday: The Razzie Nominations, for the worst movies of the year. FilmoFilia explains: “The Razzies were set up in 1980 by John Wilson, as a response to the Academy Awards, which is why the ceremony always takes place one day before the Oscars, with the same rule applying for the nominations as well.” Here’s the full list of nominees. “Boy, did the list just remind me of how many sci-fi/fantasy film stinkers existed in 2009,” says Techland. “Front runners in suckdom are Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Land of the Lost, who top the list tied at seven nominations a piece.”
